This book should form part of every Pastor’s library (whether current or aspiring). On Being a Pastor provides the rich details that only decades of service to the body of Christ can yield. I found myself highlighting most of the book and that's saying something since I seldom do so with other christian books. Pastors Alistair Begg and Derek Prime join their experiences to provide some of the most biblically sound and spiritually enriching advise. The book covers the Pastor’s role in the church and outside of from Worship, to preaching and teaching, evangelism, and so forth. It can't be stressed enough, this book is a gem and should be read carefully to draw the maximum potential from it. You will after reading this book be much closer towards understanding the role of a shepherd in the life of the believer. The highest calling in life is undoubtedly to be a shepherd one that leads primarily by example and depends solely on the holy spirit.

Arguably the greatest strength of this book Is the practical application of the various topics the authors address. Those just starting out in the ministry often feel as if there is so much they don’t know. Sure, they know Greek, Hebrew, and how to write an expositional paper, but how do they comfort a family who just lost a loved one to cancer. How do they lead an elder’s meeting? How can they gain credibility with their members? This book helps advise in those areas. The chapters actually address 1) the call and the calling, 2) life and character, 3) goals and priorities, 4) prayer, 5) devotional life, 6) study, 7) preaching, 8) pastoral care, 9) pastoral care-the practicalities, 10) the conduct of worship, 11) the responsibility to lead, 12) delegation, 13) family and leisure, 14) perils tempered by priveldges. Not only is each chapter full of useful information about ministry, but in each chapter, both of the authors offer personal accounts, testimonies, and advice related to the subject of that chapter. This book is a must for all pastors in general but especially those just starting out in ministry and feel overwhelmed by all that they don’t know.

This book is a great resource to those fresh into the ministry or those studying for it. It's as if two pastors sat down their understudy and gave him their experiences over the last 30 years or so. Though this book could be volumes in length it does well by touching only on subjects of importance for ALL pastors and does so in a broad brush sensibility. I know that I will come back to this book frequently and will read it again I'm sure in a few years for further study.

This was a very helpful book. The helpfulness of this book will be determined by your approach to the book. I got half way before I found the best approach for me. I decided that when the authors took breaks to give their personal insight, I would do the same. This helped me think through more what was being taught. It also helped me interact with the authors and think through their approaches to ministry.

Derek Prime and Alistair Begg share helpful information about how they conduct their pastoral ministries. They discuss their personal devotion habits, their commitment to regular reading, and the preparation of their sermons. They also talk about how the demands of pastoral ministry often rob them of valuable study time, and that some weeks are more hectic than others. They also candidly discuss how they prioritize time with their families. There is even a helpful discussion of whether or not a pastor should study at home or at the office (Alistair works at the office, Derek works at home). There is also a chapter about hospital and home visitation, though neither one does much of either unless there is a crisis. Alistair pastors a church where the members are scattered over a 60 mile radius, and finds that home visits would be an imposition for many busy families. They also acknowledge that in their multistaffed churches, they do not make as many visits as they might be making if they were solo pastors of small country churches in the USA.Before Alistair started pastoring at Parkside Church in Bainbridge, Ohio, he was Derek Prime's assistant, and Begg repeatedly mentions how amazed he is that his former mentor can be so well disciplined and organized. You get the impression that Alistair feels like a spiritual lightweight in the company of Prime. But it is obvious by the compassionate and humble way Alistair writes that he has spent many hours basking in the presence of our great God. He and Prime are especially fond of the Puritans, particularly John Owens, D. Martyn Lloyd Jones, and modern Anglican pastors John Stott and J.I Packer.Alistair in particular is quite fond of Charles Spurgeon (in fact, Alistair has published a modernized version of Spurgeon's classic devotional Evening and Morning).I used to attend Parkside weekly during the years I was working on my Master of Divinity, and I know personally that he labors hard in the vineyard for Christ. I wasn't familiar with Derek Prime until I read this book, but he is equally impressive.I found the book very helpful. I am fascinated by what others pastors say about their ministries, and you will be, too, when you read this book.

A must read for anyone considering the pastorate, called to be an elder, or is on a Pastor search team. It explains well that the pastorate is calling and a vocation, not a career or a job. The book gives you a glimpse of some of the blessings, responsibilities, and daily challenges pastors experience. Two pastors comment on their own real life experiences which provides some very practical application helping the reader think how they would approach various situations in a biblical manner.

A very practical guide for young and even more experienced pastors, or even those wrestling with the call. Very sound and clear advice. Nice to have the opinions of two different pastors (different personalities and some different ways of doing things) and yet with many good common denominators about the office of a pastor, as they share from their personal experience as well as their convictions from God's Word. It was very encouraging and enlightening read.
